Twitter has just introduced that it’s exposing the Site Streams feature of its API up to developers. This is big statements, as it approves mobile push services and web apps like Brizzly and Seesmic Web to quickly display new tweets, discloses and other data as soon as they arrive, rather than having to handle with Twitter’s REST API rate limits. As MG put it, these tracks are gap for real-time web junkies.
Pursuant to the Site Streams dev site, developers wound not be able to entirely abandon the REST API yet, as Site Streams will be prone to interference as Twitter works out the kinks. The feature will also simply be limited to
“a total of 100,000 simultaneous users during the beta period unless prior arrangements are made”,
though it’s hard to sense of any sites that large who do not already have a connection with Twitter.
Developers will have to assign for access to the beta, which can be located at the bottom of the developer site. And if you are itching to attempt real-time streams for yourself, a fistful of desktop clients including Seesmic, Echofon, and TweetDeck support them already.
